MODALISBOA AWAKE | STARTING POINT

ModaLisboa is as much about projection as it is about affirmation. It’s as much about dreaming as it is about making it happen. And it is, always has been, the incubator of beginnings.

Being the centre stage for the freshness of Portuguese fashion also means being the centre stage of art. There is no fashion without art. It’s therefore natural that this stage where the talent of Portuguese fashion designers perform has always been open to all forms of creation so that, together, we can build something greater.

We know the bar is high. Our spotlights have already received the power of Ana Moura, the energy of D’Alva, the genius of Salto, the love of Fred from Orelha Negra, Isaura giving us all the feels, the transcendence of Moullinex. And it wasn't just music. ModaLisboa continues to be the home of manifestos, interventions, performances, voices, words. ModaLisboa is the home of art, culture and the future — this season even more so, with a calendar of music, art, theater and dance performances that enrich the schedule and make us see the world with our eyes wide open.

PROGRAM

MARCH 5

PAÇOS DO CONCELHO

21H00 DEXTER | DJ SET HAPPENINGS UNITED FASHION LISBOA
The man responsible for the soundtrack for the fashion happenings of 15 European fashion designers from United Fashion Lisboa started playing in 1995, in the bars of Bairro Alto. He became a resident DJ at Lux Frágil in late 1999 where he continues today. It was there that he created with Zé Pedro Moura and 2m (video), the dISORDER nights (2002/2005) that filled the track and Lux screens with a whole of music and image. With José António Moura (Novo Major/flur), he made Strawberry Force Fields Forever, in which they mixed Techno classics, Acid House and MING nights (2006) that investigated Psychedelic, Disco, Electronica and Kraut Rock. Between 2009 and 2019, he planned the S T A R D U S T B A L L S parties, also at Lux, where he is currently a co-programmer. In 2010, he worked with Miguel Gonçalves Mendes in the design of the soundtrack for "José e Pilar”, the film about the life of the Nobel Prize winner José Saramago. Another of his vehicles is radio: he collaborated in several shows on Rádio Voxx and on Oxigénio, and is currently one of the voices of LuxFrágil FM, on SBSR.

19H30 MIKE11 | MODALISBOA AWAKE OPENING | JARDIM DAS LARANJEIRAS
Since he started playing Portuguese Guitar, Mike11 has become one of the biggest Portuguese promises. Awarded in 2012 as a Revelation in Portuguese Guitar at the Amália Awards, at the age of 14 he already shared the stage with Mariza, one of the many great voices he framed with his talent. But the sound memories of R&B and Hip-Hop he brought back from childhood quickly made him want to get out of his comfort zone. He realized that music is not static and that the fluidity of genres can be a platform to something greater — there are no walls when we’re making art. In 2017, he went to the USA to work with iconic producer Scott Storch (8 Grammys winner) and the result is visible in the single My Tata, with the classic R&B singer Jeremih. Now, Mike11 is working on his first record, in which he will present a world where the fusion of sounds takes us to something bigger, something that we will not be able to define because music is bigger when it sweeps us off our feet.

22H00 MISTAH ISAAC | SOCIAL AREA
Producer and composer from Cazenga (Luanda), one of the booming capitals of Angola. He came to Europe at the age of 11. He fell in love with Miles Davis, Miriam Makeba and Bob Marley. At 16 he started to compose with his viola, and to share feelings and his stories and travels. He’s a musician of the world. His music mixes African rhythm with Western influences, demonstrating that music unites cultures. He has shared big stages with big names: Donavon Frankenreiter is one of them. He composed songs for Capicua, which included the presence of singers like Gisela João. Mistah Isaac is about to release his first official album this year, "In Between the Colors", and preparing his second world tour. We highlight "Come Fly With Me" as the debut single for this album.

18H30 DUARTE MELO | LAB ROOM
Duarte started working with São José Lapa at the age of 12 and, shortly after, he was already dubbing cartoons on RTP2. He has five short films, five shows and two performances — one for João Pedro Vale and Nuno Alexandre, at MAAT, and another at Teatro Ibérico of his own authorship — in his CV and, now, he is rehearsing a show with Nova Companhia. For 15 minutes, Duarte Melo will be at MODALISBOA AWAKE with the performance TAKE CARE NOT TO KILL, COLLAPSE, “an attempt at a lecture with the purpose of informing and alerting people to sustainability, ecology, the effect of man on nature and the marks that all this leaves, technological development and its environmental impact, the importance of changing consumption and production habits that go against the discourse of reducing environmental causes”.

22H00 AURORA PINHO | JARDIM DAS LARANJEIRAS
Aurora Pinho is a performing artist, musician, actress and model. On her portfolio, she has pieces like Nymphomaniac (performance), Uterus (music), Aurora de Areia (installation), Rave in a Cave (music), Heteroptera (performance) and Aurora, a movie developed with Carlota Flor. 17H30 ORCHIDACEAE | JARDIM DAS LARANJEIRAS
It’s a feminine and feminist collective, where movement has infinite space to exist. They may have many labels, but they try to disconnect themselves from them. Orchidaceae started in 2006, with Breakdance ButterflieSoulflow collective, and in 2012 the Orchidaceae Fusion Bellydance project emerged. In 2014, they started to put everything together and today they travel between universes of movement and music that seek to mean something in a changing world. At MODALISBOA AWAKE, they’ll present a proposal within the context of women's day. A hard and feminist text:
"And I was carried 9 months by a woman.
And her by another and her by another.
And her by another and her by another.
And her by another and by another and by another and by another.
It's us. The daughters of mothers."

20H30 SURMA | JARDIM DAS LARANJEIRAS
Débora Umbelino is 24 years old and its known by its artistic name “Surma”. She was born in a small town near Leiria, Portugal and started having some musical adventures soon. She started her solo project Surma in 2015 and by 2017 she released her first album, Antwerpen, and earned the immediate attention of the media and great national festivals. In the last two years she had 200 shows through 16 different cities around the world. Her album was edited in several European countries, nominated for best independent album by IMPALA (Independent Music Companies Association) and got featured in high reputation media companies such as BBC, Musikexpress or NPR. After releasing her latest EP in 2019, Surma is now preparing a whole new album to release later this year.
