'ANTROPOLOGIA DA MODA', FILOMENA SILVANO

At first, this book deals with four questions that were identified in the first texts written about fashion: time as contemporaneity; the systematic construction of new; the opposition between costume and fashion; and the articulation between imitation and distinction. After that, it makes a parenthesis to introduce the anthropological notion of dressing, which as it is based from an universal perspective, frees fashion studies from most occidental conceptions. It continues with a presentation of major themes — the social paths of things, their cultural transits, the meanings of clothes, bodies and adornments, identities and luxury. The book ends by explaining the impacts of some civic struggles and, during the last year of pandemic, on fashion dynamics.

ART MEETS KNITWEAR
#WORKSHOP
CONSTANÇA ENTRUDO X TRIMALHAS

In this workshop, art was discussed as the main element and the starting point for Constança Entrudo's work, along with Trimalhas' raw material. The knit is almost “a second skin” for the wearer's body. It is one of the most privileged fabrics for the body that demands comfort and well-being, without losing its identity. Carlos Cardoso explained the benefits of knitwear in the active life of the new consumer, as well as the types of knitwear that Designers and brands can find in the Trimalhas universe.

WHAT ARE WE DESIGNING FOR?
#DESIGNERTALK

A master's degree in London and a long trip through India planted an ever-growing skein of ideas in Joana Duarte's mind. The fashion designer was then lost in distant lands of dreams, slowly entangling herself in a love affair with untold stories. Songs from the most diverse corners of the world, fabrics that traverse the globe, crystals, saris, doilies and embroideries. Out of these treasures found in her grandmother's chest or in flea markets and antique shops, Joana creates fashion for this day and age. But she doesn't do it alone: BÉHEN collaborates with small communities of woman artisans. Thus is spun the romantic tale between the brand and the fashion that favours time, skill, beauty and durability. And from there sprout the seeds for a richer, more ethical and more sustainable world too.

ModaLisboa And Now What?

About Talks

Talks and workshops. We focused on the questions we want to be answered and for that we invited international speakers — such as Javier Goyeneche, from ECOALF, Orsola de Castro, from Fashion Revolution, or Giusy Bettoni, from C.L.A.S.S. — our Designers — Joana Duarte, Luís Buchinho and Nuno Gama — and names from the community who make us want to be better — Tiago Manaia, Isa Toledo and Damara Inglês — to give us clues about the future. Or at least to force us to think.

We also presented two workshops with ModaLisboa’s designers — Constança Entrudo and Trimalhas, and Ana Duarte and C.L.A.S.S. — focused on the practical aspects of design and implementation of change.

Finally, it was at ModaLisboa that Filomena Silvano presented her new book, Anthropology of Fashion, in a session that took us on a journey into the various dimensions of the discipline we work on every day.
